Why diesel

A diesel generator uses less fuel than a petrol unit of the same output, runs longer between services and handles continuous, heavy loads. That's why diesel is the standard for construction sites, farms, commercial standby and prime power. Petrol suits light, occasional use. Diesel pays its way when the generator works hard or often.

Portable diesel generators

Compact diesel generators give you diesel's fuel economy and long run times in a unit you can move around a site, farm or property. The range includes open-frame and silenced models, many with electric start. See the smaller sizes in Portable Generators, or filter this range by kVA.

Industrial and commercial diesel gensets

For commercial standby, prime power and project work, we supply enclosed diesel gensets in three-phase 415V and single-phase from PowerLink, Cummins, Caterpillar and Pramac. We supply industrial generator and load bank solutions up to 2,500kVA, and larger sets are custom built to order. Industrial sets are quoted to your requirements, because the enclosure, transfer switch, fuel tank, delivery and installation all change the price. Tell us about your project and we'll recommend the right set. See also Industrial Generators.

Single-phase or three-phase

Homes and small sites usually run on single-phase 240V. Three-phase 415V powers motors, pumps, workshops and commercial buildings. Your electrician can confirm what your site uses, or we can help. Three-phase sets by size:

Prime and standby ratings

Diesel gensets carry two ratings. Standby is the output for emergency backup when the mains fails. Prime is the output for running as your main power source. Each product lists both, and we'll match the set to how you'll actually run it.

Installation, service and support

We can supply the generator on its own or deliver a turnkey job: generator, automatic transfer switch, installation, commissioning and testing. Our service team includes certified electricians and technicians trained in generator maintenance and critical power systems. We've supplied diesel generators to aged care facilities, water boards, rural councils and mine sites, with after-hours support set up around each client's needs.

Used diesel generators

Every pre-owned unit is tested and inspected. See Used and Second-Hand Generators.

Why buy from Macfarlane Generators

We've supplied and serviced generators since 1949, with branches in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. We keep diesel generators in stock, so urgent jobs don't wait on long lead times. Buy online and collect free from any branch, or have it delivered Australia-wide.

Prime power is designed to run continuously as the main power source. Standby power takes over if your main supply fails. Tell us which applies to your site and we'll specify accordingly.

Most industrial and commercial sites run three phase. Single phase suits smaller loads - offices, small workshops, some retail. If you're not sure, send us your switchboard details or existing supply and we'll confirm.

Diesel suits long run times, heavy or continuous loads and business backup. It uses less fuel for the same output and lasts longer between services. Petrol costs less upfront and suits light, occasional use.

Yes. Click & collect is available at all four branches: Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. Choose pickup at checkout.

Usually, yes. Check your machine's power draw on the power supply label. A heated humidifier pushes it up a lot, so use the runtime sum above with the humidifier on.

Yes. Freight is calculated at checkout, and click & collect is free from all four branches.

Yes, but only through a generator inlet and changeover switch installed by a licensed electrician. Never back-feed power through a power point. It's illegal and can kill line workers.

Portable units generally don't for standalone use, but connecting to your switchboard requires a licensed electrician. Talk to us if you're planning this.
