Power station or generator?
A power station suits anything low-draw that needs to run quietly or indoors. Think phone and laptop charging, lights, a camping fridge, or a CPAP machine overnight. When the battery runs flat, you recharge it, and that takes hours rather than a quick refill.
For an air conditioner, power tools or a kettle, a portable generator is still the right tool. Plenty of caravanners carry both. A small inverter generator tops up the power station during the day, and the power station gives them silent power at night.
Sizing a portable power station
Two numbers matter. Output, in watts, is the most it can run at once. Capacity, in watt-hours (Wh), is how long it keeps going.
To estimate runtime, divide the capacity by what your device draws, then take off about 15% for conversion losses. A 1,000Wh station running a 50W camping fridge gives you roughly 17 hours of compressor time. Fridges cycle on and off, so in practice it lasts longer than that.
If anything you're running has a motor or compressor, check the surge rating too. The start-up draw can be well above the running figure.
