Storm season on the Gold Coast

Summer storms and ex-tropical cyclones can bring down power lines across the Gold Coast and hinterland, and outages can last for days. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in March 2025 left large parts of South East Queensland without power. A generator sized to your home keeps the fridge, freezer, lights, phone chargers and internet running until the power is back. Always run a generator outdoors, away from windows, doors and the garage.

Choosing a generator for your home

Most homes need a generator between 5 and 20kVA, depending on what you want to run. Inverter generators give clean, stable power for TVs, laptops and modems. To power the house without running extension leads, pair the generator with a transfer switch fitted by a licensed electrician. See our full range of home backup generators and portable generators.

Backup for solar systems

Rooftop solar produces little under heavy storm cloud, and most systems without a battery switch off when the grid goes down. A generator keeps the essentials running and can recharge a home battery when the panels can't keep up. Check with your solar installer that your inverter and battery accept a generator input.

Yes. Our service team diagnoses, services and repairs the generators and alternators we sell, and we supply the spare parts.

Standby sets only run during a mains outage and are sized for that occasional load. Prime sets are designed to run as the primary power source for extended periods, a site with no mains connection at all, or one that runs off-grid deliberately. Tell us which one you need; it changes both the spec and the duty cycle rating we size to.
