Storm season on the Darling Downs

Summer storms, hail and strong winds can bring down power lines across Toowoomba and the Downs, and rural properties at the end of long lines are often the last to be reconnected. A generator keeps the fridge, freezer, lights and water pump running until the power is back. Always run a generator outdoors, away from windows, doors and sheds where people work.

Choosing a generator for your home or property

Most homes need a generator between 5 and 20kVA, depending on what you want to run. Inverter generators give clean, stable power for TVs, laptops and modems. To power the house without running extension leads, pair the generator with a transfer switch fitted by a licensed electrician. For pumps, sheds and machinery, see our generators for agriculture and farms, or browse all home backup generators and portable generators.

Backup for solar systems

Many homes and properties on the Downs run on solar. Rooftop panels produce little under heavy storm cloud, and most systems without a battery switch off when the grid goes down. A generator keeps the essentials running and can recharge a home battery when the panels can't keep up. Check with your solar installer that your inverter and battery accept a generator input.
