Inverter generators produce clean, stable power that's safe for laptops, TVs, phones and anything else with a circuit board. They run quieter than open-frame generators and use less fuel at light load, which makes them a good fit for caravanning, camping, markets and noise-sensitive sites. Our range includes portable inverter generators from Maxwatt, Pramac and our own MacGen USR. Use the Power Calculator to find your size.

How an inverter generator works

A conventional generator sends power straight from the alternator to your appliances. An inverter generator converts it to DC and back to smooth AC, so the voltage and frequency stay steady. Many models also slow the engine down when the load is light, which saves fuel and noise.

Inverter or conventional generator

Choose an inverter for sensitive electronics, for camping near other people, or for a lighter unit you can carry. An open-frame generator gives more power for the money for tools and site work. See Petrol Generators and Tradies and Worksite Generators.

Choosing the right size

Add up what you want to run at the same time and allow for start-up surges. Fridges, air conditioners and compressors can draw several times their running load as they start. Smaller inverter generators handle lights, device charging and a camping fridge. Larger models run caravan air conditioners and home essentials. Each model lists its rated and maximum output in the specifications.

Caravans, camping and RVs

For caravans and camping, look for low weight, low noise and enough output for the air conditioner or microwave. See Camping, RV and Caravan Generators. For RVs, coaches and boats, the MacGen USR range includes Honda petrol inverter and Kubota diesel inverter generators built for vehicle and marine installations. See MacGen USR.

Home backup

A larger inverter generator can keep the fridge, lights, modem and medical devices running during an outage. Connecting it to your switchboard needs an inlet and changeover switch fitted by a licensed electrician. See Home Backup Generators.

Running two units together

Some inverter models can be joined with a parallel kit to double the available power. Look for "parallel capable" in the specifications.

Why buy from Macfarlane Generators

We've sold and serviced generators since 1949, with branches in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. Collect free from any branch or have it delivered Australia-wide. Add pre-delivery setup for $150 and we'll unpack it, add oil and fuel, start it and test it before it ships.

Yes. Inverters produce low-distortion power that's safe for sensitive electronics.

Not for long. An air conditioner needs high continuous output and drains the battery quickly. An inverter generator is the better choice for that.

Diesel suits long run times, heavy or continuous loads and business backup. It uses less fuel for the same output and lasts longer between services. Petrol costs less upfront and suits light, occasional use.

No. Generators produce carbon monoxide, which can be fatal in enclosed spaces. Always run them outdoors, well away from doors and windows.

Yes. Add pre-delivery generator setup for $150. We unpack it, add oil and fuel, start it and test it before dispatch. Available on new and pre-owned portable generators.

Yes. Click & collect is available at all four branches: Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. Choose pickup at checkout.

How to find what power generator you need

The Macfarlane Generators Power Calculator helps you estimate the generator size required for your application by calculating power demand, motor starting loads, and electrical conversions such as kVA, kW, amps, and horsepower. Designed for homeowners, tradies, and industrial operators, it provides practical tools and power consumption guides to help you select the right generator with confidence. Whether you're planning backup power, construction site equipment, or large-scale operations, the calculator simplifies generator sizing and power planning.
